Tuesday before the conference: Walking tour
The walk starting at 5pm will take us from the Roeterseiland university campus through the local area filled with Deaf history to the Deaf Foundation in Amsterdam (SWDA) and take about 90 minutes. We will see many buildings and monuments related to Deaf history. One of the buildings we will pass (see picture) was a theatre famous for many Jewish actors. During WW2 it was used as a collection place for the transport of Jewish people to Westerbork, amongst them many deaf people. It is now a monument. How did the canals got their names? What do the gable stones mean? These and many other questions will be answered by your guides. There will be one guide working in international sign, one in NGT with an interpreter into English, and one in English only. We will finish at the SWDA deaf club where you can have a drink and see the small museum. This is also in an area close to many good cafes and restaurants. Please sign up for this when you register (cost: €5).
Wednesday during the poster session: Welcome reception (4 pm)
Enjoy a warm welcome to Amsterdam and the 2nd International Conference on Sign Language Acquisition.
